"Memorial to a species" Foto: Brent Stirton / Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Nu har vinnarbilderna i den tunga naturfototävlingen Wildlife Photographer of the Year utannonserats. Bland över 50 000 bidrag från 92 länder gick första pris till fotojournalisten Brent Stirton för sin starka skildring av en nyskjuten noshörning som fått sitt horn avsågat.

– Att få en så tragisk scen att se nästan majestätisk ut i sin skulpturella kraft förtjänar den högsta utmärkelsen. Det finns en råhet, men den är också väldigt gripande och därför en dignitet i den fallna jätten. Det är också en symbol av en av de mest slösaktiga, grymma och onödiga naturvårdsbrotten, som måste skapa stora protester hos allmänheten, säger tävlingsdomaren Roz Kidman Cox i en kommentar om vinnarbilden.

Utställningen med vinnarna visas på Natural History Museum i London från och med den 20 oktober och åker sedan på turné i Storbritannien och internationellt.
